A 10×16 is the minimum for most riding mowers with a 46–54 inch deck. Our standard door opening is 6 feet wide, which clears a mower deck up to 54 inches (about 4.5 feet). Factor in handle bars and your own walking space — a 10×20 or 12×16 is more comfortable if you plan to store anything else alongside the mower.

Will a 10×12 shed fit a riding mower?

It's very tight. A 10×12 has an interior of about 9'4" × 11'4". Most riding mowers are 4–4.5 feet wide and 6–7 feet long. You can technically get the mower in, but there's little room to walk around it or store anything else. We recommend stepping up to a 10×16 — it's our bestseller for exactly this reason.

How much bigger should I go than I think I need?

Always buy one size up from your current needs. A good rule is to build in a 25% buffer — if you think you need 160 sq ft, go to 192 or 200 sq ft. Sheds fill up faster than you expect. You'll add tools, seasonal items, and equipment over time. Going one size up typically adds only $30–60/month on RTO terms, which is far cheaper than buying a second shed later.

What fits in a 12×24 shed?

Quite a lot. A 12×24 (interior ~11'4" × 23'4") comfortably fits: a riding mower with a 54" deck, a full-size ATV or UTV, a 6–8 foot workbench along one wall, floor-to-ceiling shelving on two walls, a generator, lawn chemicals and fertilizer, bikes, and overhead wall-mount storage for kayaks or canoes. It's the most versatile size we carry for homeowners who have both a mower and an ATV.

Does the shed size include wall thickness?

Shed dimensions are always exterior (outside-to-outside). The walls take up roughly 3–4 inches per side, so subtract 6–8 inches from both the width and length to get usable interior space. For example, a 10×16 shed has an interior floor space of approximately 9'4" × 15'4". Always plan your layout using interior dimensions.

What size shed do I need for an ATV?

A single ATV or side-by-side typically needs a 10×16 minimum — ATVs are about 4 feet wide and 6–8 feet long, and you need clearance to walk around and load/unload. For two ATVs, or an ATV plus a riding mower, go with a 12×24 or larger. Standard doors are 6 feet wide, which clears most ATVs, but double-check your specific machine width before ordering.

What size shed do I need for a 2-car garage replacement?

A portable shed cannot replace a 2-car garage — you'd need a 24×30 or larger structure, which falls into steel building territory. A steel garage can be engineered with a concrete slab, proper footings, roll-up doors, and can be permitted as a permanent structure.
