What Makes a Quality Shed?
Not all sheds are built the same. Cheap sheds fall apart in a few years. Quality sheds last decades. Here is how to tell the difference.
Investing in a shed is a big decision. You need something that will protect your belongings, withstand the elements, and last for years to come. The problem is — not all sheds are created equal. Cheap sheds are built with cheap materials and flimsy construction, while quality sheds use superior materials and proven construction techniques. Learn the difference and get your money's worth.
Quality vs. Cheap: Side by Side
OUR SHEDS
Hand-built by skilled Mennonite craftsmen. Every joint is tight. Every board is straight.
CHEAP SHEDS
Factory assembled by low-wage workers. Rushed and sloppy. Gaps and misaligned boards.
OUR SHEDS
Engineered wood with a 50-year warranty. Resists rot, termites, hail, and Texas heat.
CHEAP SHEDS
Thin T1-11 plywood that cracks, warps, and peels in 3 to 5 years.
OUR SHEDS
30-year metal roof rated for North Texas wind, hail, and UV. Zero maintenance.
CHEAP SHEDS
Cheap 3-tab shingles that blow off in the first big storm.
OUR SHEDS
2x6 pressure-treated floor joists — 16" OC on standard sheds, 12" OC on garages. Standard sheds use 5/8" tongue-and-groove flooring; garages step up to 3/4" standard for heavier loads.
CHEAP SHEDS
2x4 floor joists on 24-inch centers with cheap OSB. Sags under a riding mower in 2 years.
Choosing the Right Shed Size
Picking the perfect shed size depends on your needs. The most common mistake is underestimating how much space you truly need. Here are a few things to consider:
- Storage Needs: What will you be storing? Lawn mowers, tools, outdoor furniture, or more? Measure items and add extra space.
- Future Needs: Plan for the future. If your needs grow, get a larger shed now.
- Building Codes: Some communities may require permits, size limitations, or setbacks.

A Closer Look at What Goes Into Our Sheds
When you buy a shed from a big-box store or a random online retailer, you are usually getting the cheapest possible materials thrown together as fast as possible. The siding is thin T1-11 plywood that starts to warp, crack, and peel within a few years of Texas sun and rain. The floor joists are undersized 2x4s on 24-inch centers that sag under anything heavier than a lawn chair. And the roof is often cheap 3-tab shingles that blow off in the first serious storm. You end up replacing the shed in 5 to 10 years — spending twice as much in the long run.
LP SmartSide Siding — 50-Year Warranty
Every shed we sell uses LP SmartSide engineered wood siding. This is not regular plywood. LP SmartSide is treated with the proprietary SmartGuard process that protects against termites, fungal decay, and moisture damage. It carries an industry-leading 50-year limited warranty — the longest of any engineered wood siding on the market. It handles hail, impact, and the relentless Texas heat without cracking, warping, or peeling. You can paint it any color you want and it holds paint beautifully for years. Compared to T1-11 plywood or vinyl siding, LP SmartSide is in a completely different league.
Mennonite Craftsmanship — Built One at a Time
Our sheds are hand-built by skilled Mennonite craftsmen who take pride in every joint, every board, and every detail. This is not an assembly line. Each shed is constructed individually by builders who have been doing this their entire lives. Mennonite building traditions go back generations — the same care and precision that built barns and homes across rural America goes into every shed we sell. You can see the difference the moment you walk inside: tight joints, straight walls, no gaps, no shortcuts.
16" On-Center Wall Studs
Our wall framing uses 2x4 studs on 16-inch centers. This is the same standard used in residential home construction. Cheap sheds cut corners with 24-inch on-center framing, which leaves the walls weaker and more likely to bow or flex over time. The tighter 16-inch spacing means a stronger, more rigid structure that holds up to wind, shelving loads, and decades of use.
Treated Floor Joists & Premium Decking — Built for Ground Contact
The floor system is the foundation of any shed. Our buildings use 2x6 pressure-treated floor joists sitting on 4x6 pressure-treated skids — rated for ground contact so moisture, insects, and rot won't compromise the structure. Standard sheds run joists at 16-inch centers with 5/8" tongue-and-groove flooring. Our garages step it up to 12-inch on-center spacing and 3/4" tongue-and-groove flooring standard for even more rigidity under heavy loads. Cheap sheds use untreated or minimally treated 2x4 joists with basic OSB that swells, warps, and fails within a few years. The difference is night and day when you're parking vehicles, running heavy equipment, or building a real workshop.
30-Year Metal Roof
Every shed we sell comes with a 30-year metal roof. Metal roofs handle North Texas hail, wind, and UV far better than cheap shingles. They shed water instantly, resist rust with modern coatings, and require virtually zero maintenance. Big-box sheds use cheap 3-tab shingles that blow off in the first serious storm — ours don't.
Big-Box Sheds vs. Ours — The Real Cost
A cheap shed from a big-box store might cost $2,000 to $3,000 upfront, but you will spend that again in repairs or replacement within 5 to 10 years. Our sheds start at $3,395 and last 30 to 50 years with minimal maintenance. When you factor in longevity, warranty coverage, and the quality of materials, our sheds cost less per year than anything you will find at a big-box retailer. And with our rent-to-own program using width-based deposits with no credit check, getting a quality shed is more affordable than most people expect.
